So this winter was a tough one for anyone who enjoys snowboarding. Mother Nature took the bounties of 14-15 season and dumped them out west for the 15-16 season, leaving much of the North East to make use of what the Snowmakers gave us.
Once Spring sprung, I found myself wanting to skate. Not just dork around on the quarter pipe in the driveway skate but go to parks and skate. Fortunately for me, I learned through an old skate buddy that there is a park about 5 minutes from my office.
So over the last 3 weeks I have skated, at a park 3 times a week. While my old legs don’t last as long as they did in 94 my passion to skate and relearn and even learn some new tricks ones. It has been a fun month or so and while I can’t say I am killing it out there, I know I am doing well enough for someone who hasn’t skated regularly in almost 10 years and I am having FUN!
Here is a couple clips from the @buzzardbrigade IG Channel of me and Ankle Bob over at Northborough;
Well it’s almost Christmas and fortunately, I have been able to get out 3 days at Wachusett Mountain with my family and friends but is has not been pretty. Riding Ralph’s Run for three days is better than not riding at all, but not by much.
Heading into this winter NOAA was saying that the ” Godzilla El Nino” would make the Northeast Milder than normal and we’d have rain. On the other hand The Farmer’s Almanac called for more of what we got last year. Dumped.
At this point it certainly looks like the Godzilla El Nino is legit. The unseasonably warm temps have kept the majority of the North East’s snowmaking crews at bay and in turn have saddened riders and skiers everywhere.
I have had friends say, ” last year we didn’t get dumped until the end of January” which is true but the temps in December were low enough that Southern New England Mountains like Wachusett have more that 50% of mountain open and Southern and Central NH and VT mountains have even more terrain.
As it sis here today Wachusett will not be able to open this weekend 🙁
Even MT Snow only has 6 trails and Killington 17…
We can only hope that the Jet Stream will shift pull in some arctic temps to allow the snowmaking to resume and get some snow down soon than later. There will be snowmaking temps over the weekend but it is going to return to warm 40-50 degree days again next week.
Winter starts in a few days but it sure doesn’t feel like it.
