So Google is rolling out new Google Plus Profile and Page Update today. I just logged in and mine had been updated. Initial read tells me that there are some benefits to this new layout and probably a few things that people won’t like.
First off, the new Cover Photo ( if you upgrade to it) is HUGE. Like HUGE with a capital U hUge( bonus points if you know this movie reference!) On my 13″ MacBook Air my new cover photos takes up everything above the fold.
See what I mean? HUGE.
Beyond that for possible negatives, there seems to be some white space that is reminiscent of the April 11th 2012 Layout change where the hashtag #whitespace trended on Google+ for some 20+ hours.
Now for a few positives of this new Google Plus Profile and Page Update,
They added some new tabs to the the profiles that feature the +1’s you have given. This feature was here initially at launch as a default but most regular users seemed hide through settings. I know I did. With this update it is back .
They also added a dedicated the tab for reviews. Previously reviews written by a Google+ user were shown on their about me page near the bottom. Not it is prominently displayed on a Ribbon that also features About/Posts/Photos/Youtube, etc…
Also your name and features ribbon detaches and locks to the top as visitors scroll down your page. Nice little feature. I was bummed that they didn’t implement my beloved click the black bar to return to the top like you can with the primary black and grey bar at the top of Google+. A solid user interface that to this day I am still shocked that Yahoo and Facebook haven’t sniped.
Update 1:00PM Click the name or photo and you will return to the top of the stream.
The Gear wheel is where you can manipulate the items that show up in the ribbon and who sees what on your profile page.
The new About page has a very Google Now look and feel to it and I anticipate this to tie in to future enhancements to the look and feel of the entire Google ecosystem including Google Now.
If you don’t have the update yet, don’t worry. Google will be rolling it out to everyone throughout the day. Sarah McKinley the Googler who announced the change around 10:00am EST on her Google Plus profile https://plus.google.com/u/0/108713714482790711568/posts/JCvsy7x7iQs covers more the details than what I have covered here.
As always, Onward and Upward!
